Future of Nursing
\nIn the past couple of years, the nursing industry has experienced great changes. Advancement in technology has played a key part in bringing this change. With an aging patient population and new health challenges in the current world, the demand for safe, high quality, and effective health care services has increased significantly. Therefore, the nursing industry must evolve progressively to ensure that they accommodate these changes.
\nNursing professionals should also ensure that they are able to keep up with these developments so that they can extend only the best clinical care to the patients. To succeed, major stakeholders in the health industry believe that there is a need to diversify the role of health care providers, particularly primary care physicians and pharmacists comprised mostly of nurses.
\nThe Institute of Medicine IOM, in collaboration with the ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION, launched a 2-year initiative focused on transforming the nursing profession. In their report, they acknowledge primary care and prevention as the major players of the health system, interprofessional collaboration, and coordination as the norms while the payment to acquire health care services as the reward. To meet these goals, they agreed that there was a great need to change and diversify most aspects of the health care system, particularly the nursing profession, which represents the larger part of the health care workforce.
\nAfter examining the current state of the industry, the committee released a report titled \u201cFuture of nursing: leading change, advancing health.\u201d The report addressed changes that they committee felt were necessary for the nursing filed. One major goal addressed by the report was the need to increase and diversify nursing education to nurture a nursing workforce in which more than 80 percent of the professionals hold a bachelor\u2019s degree. This push was also extended in related doctoral degrees.
\nThe report emphasized the need for maximizing the potential value of their educational system, encouraging nurses to pursue, particularly doctoral degrees, in the initial stages of their careers. The committee also felt that the Ph.D. and the DNP programs should incorporate coursework that focuses on impacting skills that adequately prepares the students to adopt to changes in the fast-evolving health care system.
\nWith more than 3 million workforce members, the nursing industry should take the front line in the campaign to transform the health care system. Other parties, like the government, insurance companies, and businesses, should also collaborate to improve the quality and safety and envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
