Imagine you are tasked with conducting a counseling intake interview with a 19 year old college student who is feeling sad, unmotivated, and worried about his grades. It is the student’s first semester at school, and he is finding that he has gone from being an A student in high school to a B- student in college. He has also moved 500 miles away from his hometown to attend school. Think about being entrusted with the responsibility of conducting an intake interview with a 19-year-old college student who is depressed, unmotivated, and concerned about his academic performance. After only one semester at college, the student discovers that his academic performance has deteriorated from being an A student in high school to a B- student in college. In addition, he has relocated 500 kilometres away from his homeland in order to attend school.

A variety of counselling approaches (including cognitive, humanistic, psychodynamic, and behavioural approaches) were reviewed in this week’s lecture, including how they might be utilised to guide and comprehend an interview.
