Purpose

Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
Part 1: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic integrity means committing to honesty and ethical behavior in every piece of scholarly work. When writing papers or discussion posts, integrity requires properly citing sources, avoiding plagiarism, and presenting original ideas (Carter et al., 2019). Strong writing skills and integrity go hand in hand—clear, honest writing reflects clear, honest thinking.
Professional practices in nursing rest on the same ethical foundation. Scholarly ethics translate directly into clinical ethics: accurate documentation, evidence-based interventions, and placing patient welfare first (American Nurses Association, 2015; Kangasniemi et al., 2021). A nurse who cuts corners on a research paper is more likely to cut corners at the bedside.
Tools like Grammarly, SafeAssign, and deliberate paraphrasing protect integrity. Grammarly catches grammar and clarity issues, SafeAssign flags unintentional overlap with existing sources, and thoughtful paraphrasing proves I truly understand the material (Carter et al., 2019; Eaton, 2023).
Part 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
As an MSN student, I will continue running every paper through SafeAssign before submission, carefully reviewing matches, and paraphrasing thoroughly. I also keep an APA manual handy and use Walden’s Writing Center tutors when needed.
As a professional, I will review the ANA Code of Ethics annually and participate in my hospital’s ethics committee. These habits will keep integrity at the center of both my academic journey and lifelong nursing career.

Strengths: Comprehensive synthesis of longitudinal studies, clear clinical recommendations. Limitations: Focuses primarily on high-income countries; more data needed from diverse populations. Relevancy: Directly applicable to psychiatric-mental health practice and patient education.
Step 2: Summary of Analysis
I find peer-reviewed articles by starting in Walden’s library databases (CINAHL Complete, PubMed, PsycINFO) and using filters for “peer-reviewed” and publication dates within the last five years. Two especially effective strategies are (1) adding Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and (2) setting date limits immediately. My go-to future resource will remain CINAHL Complete because it indexes virtually all major nursing journals and offers full-text access to most articles (Wakefield, 2022).

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) vs. Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)
PMHNPs assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness across the lifespan in outpatient clinics, inpatient units, and telehealth settings. WHNPs focus on reproductive, gynecologic, and primary care for women from adolescence through menopause. While both are rewarding, the lifelong, holistic nature of mental health care and the current national shortage of providers drew me decisively to PMHNP (Delaney & Vanderhoef, 2019; Weber et al., 2024).
Justification of Chosen Specialty
The growing mental health crisis, persistent stigma, and severe provider shortage make psychiatric-mental health nursing both urgently needed and deeply meaningful. I want to spend my career helping people rebuild their lives—one conversation, one prescription, one recovery story at a time.
Professional Organization
American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Membership is open to all RNs interested in psychiatric nursing. I will join as a regular member immediately upon graduation and plan to attend the annual conference to present my capstone findings.
