Moral Values
\nWhen confronted with an ethical dilemma, we become aware of
\nour personal values and what we base them on. As critical thinkers, we
\nneed to use informed reasoning and critically reflect on our moral code
\nto accurately understand any dilemma in which we find ourselves, and
\nmake a well-informed decision.
\nReview Thinking Activity 9.2, \u201cWhat Are My Moral Values?\u201d on
\npages 391-392. Then, respond to three of the twelve questions on page
\n392. Your response should be 1-2 pages long.

\nwe experiment with animals to improve the quality of our lives?
\nI do believe that we have a moral
\nobligation to those less fortunate than us. Why can a homeless person evoke
\nfeelings of compassion in one person and complete disgust in another? Over
\ntime, observation, experience, and intuition have formed the cornerstones of my
\nbeliefs, morally and intellectually. As a result, compassion and respect for
\nothers are moral values that have come to characterize my responses in my
\ndealings with others. As a volunteer in an international relief program in
\nDehra Dun, India, I was assigned to various hospitals and clinics through
\ndifferent regions of the country. In Delhi, I and the other volunteers were
\noverwhelmed by the immense poverty\u2014thousands of people, poor and deformed,
\nlined the streets\u2014homeless, hungry, and desperate. We learned that over 300
\nmillion people in India live in poverty. Compassion, as Buddhists describe it,
\nis the spontaneous reaction of an open heart. Compassion for all sentient
\nbeings, acknowledging the suffering and difficulties in the world around us,
\nconnects us not only with others but with ourselves.
\nAfter you have completed this
\nactivity, examine your responses as a whole. Do they express a general,
\ncoherent, well-supported value system, or do they seem more like an unrelated
\ncollection of beliefs of varying degrees of clarity? This activity is a
\nvaluable investment of your time because you are creating a record of beliefs
\nthat you can return to and refine as you deepen your understanding of moral
\nvalues.
