You′ve been using box-and-whisker plots and five-number summaries created by hand and by your calculator. Now you′ll look at the output of a common statistical program called MINITAB. Describe the shape of either the raisin or tree distribution in terms of skewness and outliers. Why does the distribution of tree ages have an outlier, while the distribution of the number of raisins in a full 14-ounce box of raisins does not? What is it about the nature of each situation that makes an outlier more likely in one and less likely in the other? When would you use the TI-83 to create box plots, and when would you use a computer?
