Family Nurse Practitioner

Family Nurse Practitioner

Communication and collaboration within the multidisciplinary healthcare team are important concepts in my daily practice as a family nurse practitioner (Blais, 2015). Family nurse practitioners, with the exception of surgery practices, provide care to patients from childhood to adulthood.
Effective communication serves as a foundation for building trust between patients and nurses, as well as between nurses and the healthcare organizations to which they belong. Communication between the patient and the nurse allows the nurse to understand all of the underlying conditions of the illness during diagnosis, allowing for more effective treatment and overall healthcare. Effective communication will assist the nurse in understanding the patient’s family history and lifestyle habits, which may have an impact on their health. Communication between the healthcare provider and the health organization ensures that the nurse follows organizational guidelines in order to avoid errors and procedures that may implicate the organization, in a case like mine where I am a member of an organization.
Teamwork is critical to ensuring patient safety and quality outcomes. Collaboration among members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team enables us to achieve our organizational goal (Hartgerink et al., 2014). If I need to refer my client to surgery, I must provide the exact diagnosis, patient history, and any medical conditions that may interfere with treatment. Involving patients and their families in the healthcare process is also part of teamwork. Allowing patients to participate increases their sense of responsibility for their health.
Finally, teamwork and effective communication in the healthcare profession lead to both patient and my satisfaction as a family nurse practitioner (Körner, Wirtz, Bengel, & Göritz, 2015). Teamwork leads to effective communication, and vice versa, so the two concepts must be used during care delivery to meet the objectives.
