Virtual Memory Limits
Virtual memory is a memory that exists within the main storage device, most of the memory is, however, supported by data held within a secondary storage device. The virtual memory acts as if it is the systemβs RAM or primary memory. It can be accessed easily by the CPU (Rubens, 2019). Virtual memory is dependent on the type of OS used. It is also limited relative to the amount of space available in the portable computing device. This is because the size of the virtual storage is limited by the addressing scheme/space present in the computer service and by the amount of secondary memory available within the device. This is not the same as the actual memory locations.
To adjust the physical RAM, there is a need for one to establish the amount of physical RAM present within the device. Beal (2016) identifies that physical RAM is contained within the address space, and the purpose of virtual RAM is to expand the address space. Briand (2017) states that in most cases the virtual RAM is set to a page two times the amount of physical Ram available; stating that for RAM size between 4GB and 16GB, recommended size of virtual RAM will be two times. Implying 8GB and 32GB, respectively. Briand (2017) also defines that for physical RAM above 16GB, a page file maximum is set between 1 and 1.5 times relative to the amount of RAM for it to be functional and efficient. Rubens (2019) identifies that a key problem with virtual memory occurs when the virtual memory is bigger than the physical RAM. That performance is slowed down by transfer of data from the CPU ends up slowing the device in a process called thrashing.
Virtual RAM is dependent on the amount of storage space available. Philips (2019) identifies that the paging file is a minimum of 1.5 to three times the physical RAM. A formula developed suggests that the Virtual RAM = [1GB RAM x Installed RAM x Maximum] (Philips, 2019). 32GB RAM= 1024 x 32 x 3 = 98,304, this translates to 98GB RAM. On the contrary it could translate to 1024 x 32 x 1.5 = 49,152 which translates to 48GB of virtual RAM. This implies that dependent on the space. The RAM could provide a paging file equal to one to three times the physical RAM.
