Your manager wants to investigate moving to a simpler, more streamlined way of doing business. She has asked you to make a flat file with an alternate arrangement of the student data. Use your database and populate it with the first five students in the database. You can use any criteria you like to define “first.” If you have questions about some of the fields, make sure include those in your memo. In the meantime, assume what you need to assume to generate the fields.

The flat file should include columns for:
• Student first and last name
• Student major
• Student GPA
• Course number, description, and units
• Offering term
• Faculty first and last name

You have some concerns about moving your entire university operations out of SQL to this flat file format.

⭐ What students say about their papers

Real feedback from students who used our service this month:

“Got my dissertation literature review done in 4 days. My supervisor said it was the strongest section in my whole thesis.”

— Maya R., MSc Psychology, UK

“Needed an APA research paper overnight. It was perfectly formatted and I scored 89%. Will use again.”

— Carlos M., Business Admin, US

“The nursing case study was exactly what I needed — proper clinical terminology and Harvard referencing.”

— Fatima A., BSc Nursing, UAE

Write your boss a memo, outlining any concerns or hesitations you have about moving to this format for management of your data. Include the pros and cons of the relational database format and the flat file format. Be sure to think critically, and include any problematic use case scenarios.

Submit your memo and within the memo include a table or screenshot showing the first five students’ information in the flat file you generated. Append any .SQL or .csv flat files to this submission, and also make sure you paste your first five students’ worth of flat file information into the body of your memo as a screenshot or table.

Score Definition
90 – 100%
(63-70 points) Exceeds Expectations. These memos are really exceptional. They meet all the criteria of the “meets expectations” memo, and go beyond in some meaningful way. The “beyond” may be in very illustrative and detailed use case scenarios, critical thinking regarding additional components of databases such as security, or it may be in additional background research to provide additional perspectives. The business case is clear and easy to follow. Demonstrates mastery of the data management and SQL techniques we have covered in class.
80 – 89%
(56 – 62 points) Meets Expectations. The average score at UMUC is 85%, and a memo which meets expectations will earn this score. This type of memo will typically be reasonably easy to follow, with good writing style. It will contain a clear recommendation about whether to move to the flat file and at least three reasons supporting the recommendation. It will outline use case scenarios where relevant. It will also contain solid understanding of the relational database concepts and data management concepts we have covered in class, and will tie this case study into our class work. May include a small amount of outside research. Typographical and grammatical mistakes are few to none. All APA formatting is met.
0 – 79%
(0 – 55 points) Does Not Meet Expectations. This type of memo may not contain a clear recommendation about whether to move to a flat file format. It will contain fewer than three reasons supporting the recommendation, and may not contain use case scenarios. It shows incomplete or incorrect understanding of relational database and data management concepts. No outside research and weak ties into class work. May have typographical or grammatical errors, and may not follow APA formatting.
