Discussion 3 Internship
I was delighted the first time I learned that the Criminal Defense Law Firm had accepted my application to work there as an intern. Therefore, I was excited at the thought of getting the chance to work with some of the best legal minds in the country. Before starting the internship, I had this notion that I would get to work with these top lawyers directly, interact with defendants as I interviewed them, take part in court proceedings, and even get the chance to defend some of the clients. Now, looking back, I must admit that my expectations were too high. The reality of my actual experience is to offer supporting roles to the junior and senior lawyers. Up till now, I have not come across any unofficial duties apart from offering to accompany clients to their first hearing, depositions, and to the crime scene.
While working at this law firm, I have discovered I possess several strengths. For instance, I discovered that I have strong oral and written communications skills. I have been congratulated many times for drafting letters and legal documents clearly and concisely. I have also discovered that I work well with teams; I have been able to work well with the professionals to accomplish some of the goals we have set. I have realized I am creative problem solver as well. There are many instances where I have provided solutions to the challenges we have faced in the law firm and they have worked perfectly. However, I have realized that one of my main weaknesses is perfectionism. I try to ensure that everything comes out perfect; obviously, this is impossible. Most of the coworkers and supervisors have loved my work because I try to be of help as much as I can, and even ask them to give me work whenever I feel I can help decrease their workload. I would want to continue working in this area. I have had the chance to interact with defendants and as such, I have learned that the society judges them too harshly. I would like to be at the forefront of ensuring that their stories are heard.
