Preparing for the National Nurse Practitioner Board Exam
As a new graduate nurse practitioner, preparing for the boards is one of my top priorities. I have developed a rigorous study schedule to help feel prepared on exam day. Each week, I dedicate at least 20 hours to reviewing materials from my top three favorite resources. The first is Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Intensive Review by Codina Leik (2020). This $99 book provides a comprehensive overview of primary care topics through detailed outlines, practice questions, and test-taking strategies (Leik, 2020). I find the question format and detailed rationales especially helpful for identifying my areas of weakness.
I also utilize the “Next Steps” powerpoint (Jones et al., 2022) which discusses test-taking skills and common board exam pitfalls. Though not a traditional study material, I have found the advice on managing anxiety and approach valuable. In addition, I subscribe to SimpleNursing’s FNP board review course (SimpleNursing, n.d.). At $299 for a 6-month subscription, it provides over 1,000 practice questions and micro-lectures on high-yield topics that I can access from any device. I like that I can track my progress and focus my studies based on performance.
Besides preparing for boards, other important considerations for a new NP include obtaining malpractice insurance and a National Provider Identifier number (NPI). An NPI allows billing for clinical services and is required to practice (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2023). Being board-certified and having the proper documentation will make me a strong candidate for primary care jobs. I aim to sit for my boards within 6 months in order to quickly gain experience and independence in my new role.
